This past weekend, Houston tennis reached a historic milestone, as it continued its unbeaten ways. At 9-0, this became their best start to the season since 1990.

The Cougars secured two commanding home victories over the weekend, defeating UTSA on Friday and SFA on Sunday to remain undefeated.

On Friday, Houston blanked UTSA 7-0.

The Cougars set the tone early in doubles play. Junior Elizaveta Morozova and Junior Petja Drame delivered a 6-0 sweep, while senior Sophie Schouten and senior Chems Doha Zeghlouli clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory.

Assistant coach Chris Wootton’s message was simple: be aggressive. That approach carried into singles competition.

Junior Valeriia Krokhotina opened with a dominant 6-0 first set and closed out her match 6-1 in the second. Morozova maintained her momentum from doubles, winning 6-0, 6-1. Houston completed the sweep to improve to 8-0 on the season.

The Cougars followed up with another strong performance Sunday, defeating Stephen F. Austin 6-1.

In doubles, junior Iva Sepa and Krokhotina cruised to a 6-0 win. Drame and Morozova added a 6-3 victory to secure the doubles point.

Houston’s dominance continued in singles. Krokhotina defeated junior Avery Kinsey 6-1, 6-0. Drame posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over junior Ana Paula Chavez.

SFA’s sophomore Sonja Rooth earned the lone point for the Ladyjacks, defeating Zeghlouli in three sets. The result did not affect the overall outcome as Houston improved to 9-0.

The Cougars will open conference play Feb. 26 against Utah at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
