Houston opened its two-game homestand with a 5-0 rout of Northwestern State, scoring its first goals of the season after being held scoreless in its opener.
“Much better than last week,” coach Ben Williams said. “A lot better in front of goal, a little more attentive in the final third. A win is a win. That’s all that matters.”
Sophomore forward Samira Minor, who made last season’s Big 12 Second and All-Freshman teams, scored the opener in the second minute with a tap-in off a pass from junior forward Skyler Miller.
In the 29th minute, she converted the third from the penalty spot after a handball in the box by the Demons.
“I’m feeling good,” Minor said. “I’m really honored to contribute to my team today.
Senior midfielder Danielle Shannon added the second of the three goals scored in the first half in the 26th minute with a mid-range strike inside the penalty box to help close out the half in strong fashion.
Nearly five minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Bailey Cate fired a shot inside the six-yard box and into the back of the net for her first-ever collegiate goal, before junior forward Skylar Miller headed home her goal off a knockdown pass from Shannon.
“[Cate] has a massive upside. Skylar has the same thing. She’s got a huge upside as well,” Williams said. “So we’re excited to have that here and add to the group.
Houston dominated Northwestern State from start to finish, having 22 shots (15 on target) to two and winning nine corners compared to the Demons’ two.
“We want to play something exciting. So the more and more we do that, hopefully, more fans will come out and enjoy some games,” Williams said.
The Cougars end their two-game homestand on Sunday, Aug. 23, when they take on Tarleton State at 1 p.m.
