Houston softball opened the Houston Invitational at Cougar Softball Stadium on Thursday and turned the four-game home stand into a statement weekend.
The combination of late-inning rallies, power hitting and dominant pitching led to a 4-1 stretch, improving Houston’s record to 8-1 on the season.
Second straight year with a 5-0 start
To open the invitational on Thursday, the Cougars rallied past the Pittsburgh Panthers 6-3.
The Cougars improved to 5-0 after breaking a late tie with a four-run sixth inning, marking back-to-back seasons opening 5-0 and just the third such start since 2012.
Houston evened the score early with solo home runs from sophomore outfielder Ariel Redmond in the third inning and sophomore two-way Maddie Hartley in the fourth.
The decisive sixth inning featured aggressive baserunning that set up freshman infielder Ronnie Esparza’s RBI single to tie the game.
Sophomore catcher Isabel Cintron followed with the go-ahead hit, driving in two runs and Redmond added insurance to seal the comeback victory.
Friday split highlights power surge
Houston split its Friday doubleheader to move to 6-1 overall, opening with a 12-4 run-rule win over the Lafayette Leopards before falling 10-2 to Penn State, handing the Cougars their first loss of the season.
In game one, Houston erased an early deficit with a momentum-swinging fourth inning.
Trailing 4-3, Redmond tied the game with a leadoff solo homer, and Hartley followed with a two-run shot to give Houston its first lead. The Cougars broke it open with a six-run sixth inning, capped by Cintron’s walk-off three-run homer.
The matchup with Penn State saw Houston struggle to keep pace despite another Redmond home run.
Junior infielder Makenna Mitchell added a double and a run, while sophomore catcher Savanna Luther made her collegiate debut, stepping in behind the plate.
Penn State pulled away late to snap Houston’s unbeaten start.
Gardner’s walk-off caps Saturday comeback
Freshman outfielder RyLee Gardner delivered the weekend’s signature moment Saturday, blasting a walk-off two-run homer to lift Houston to a 10-9 comeback win over the Michigan Wolverines.
Trailing 9-4 entering the seventh, the Cougars launched three home runs to complete the rally and improve to 7-1.
Houston struck first on a two-run homer from Mitchell, but the turning point came late.
Gardner cut the deficit with her first collegiate home run in the sixth. In the seventh, Cintron added a solo shot, Hartley crushed a three-run homer to pull Houston within one and Gardner’s second homer of the day sealed the comeback.
Freshman utility player Hailey Gore also made her collegiate debut as a pinch-hitter.
Brown leads shutout to close weekend
Houston closed the invitational Sunday with a 7-0 shutout of the Incarnate Word Cardinals behind a complete-game performance from sophomore pitcher Nevaeh Brown.
Brown struck out five across seven scoreless innings as the Cougars improved to 8-1, finishing the weekend 4-1 with 37 runs scored.
The Cougars built an early lead with a first-inning sacrifice fly from Gardner and a two-run single from Cintron.
Redmond added a two-run homer in the fourth, and solo shots from Mitchell and Hartley capped the scoring. The balanced offense paired with Brown’s dominant outing sealed a strong finish.
Houston hits the road for the first time this season, at the Cajun AC Louisiana Clash hosted by the McNeese Cowgirls.
The Cougars open play with a Friday doubleheader against Missouri and McNeese at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond on Feb. 20.
