Houston wide receiver Stephon Johnson has rejoined the team after being granted a fifth year of eligibility, coach Willie Fritz announced after Monday’s practice.

Fritz and the program took a cautious approach and didn’t want to onboard Johnson until they felt confident he’d be able to play in 2026.

“We feel pretty good about it,” Fritz said. “He knows how we run a program, how we do things. We’re excited about having him back.”

Johnson’s arrival comes as part of a preliminary injunction that grants fifth-year eligibility to high school class of 2022 athletes.

The Houston native suffered a Lisfranc fracture in his right foot last October against Oklahoma State which required season-ending surgery, but is “100% healthy” according to Fritz.

“It’s not going to be easy for him, because he’s nine months behind,” Fritz said.

“But he’s a hard working guy. He’ll do a great job.”
