Defying the odds of an early deficit, Houston soccer made the most of its shot opportunities to push its way back, beating Iowa State 2-1 and improving its conference record to 2-3-2.

The team completed its first comeback victory since its 4-1 win over Texas on Aug. 24.

The win keeps Houston in contention for the Big 12 Tournament, which features the top eight of the conference’s 16 teams. Houston currently sits at ninth in the conference standings with eight points.

Within the first four minutes of the contest, the score was tied at one.

Roster depth paid big dividends for the team, as two freshmen contributed their second goals of the season.

With freshman forward Amaris Bumba finishing a corner kick assist made by junior midfielder Ava Shannon to even the score, only two minutes after Iowa State scored in the second minute.

34 minutes into the tie game, freshman midfielder Madyson Bentil set up the Cougars’ leading attack, dribbling across the pitch and scoring a game-winner on her second and final shot for the day.

With the victory, the team reignited the competitive spark that flickered throughout its five-game winless streak after the Sept. 18 conference opener against Cincinnati.

Next up, Houston faces a fitting test of its home dominance (5-1-1 at Carl Lewis International Complex), hosting UCF, which holds an identical 5-1-1 record on the road, this Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m.
