Houston women’s basketball is losing a promising young piece for next season, as freshman forward Jade Jones announced her intention to enter the transfer portal on Thursday, she tells New Era Prep.
“After taking time to think and talking with my family, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal and continue my journey,” Jones said in a statement.
In the first season of her collegiate career, Jones played 30 games, starting in 14 of them. In 22.1 minutes per game, she averaged 5.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 1.1 steals.
“I’m really grateful for my time with Houston Cougars women’s basketball. My freshman year meant a lot to me, and I’m thankful to have been part of such a great program.”
On Nov. 24, 2025, Jones was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week after averaging 16 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals across a three-game span. It marked the first-ever Big 12 weekly honor in program history for Houston since joining the conference in the 2023-24 season.
Jones also became the first player in program history to earn a Freshman of the Week award since the 2020-21 campaign, when Laila Blair was named AAC Freshman of the Week on March 1, 2021.
In one of those games, a road matchup against UTRGV on Nov. 20, Jones scored a career-high 18 points. It was her first career start, which included hitting the game-winner at the buzzer to seal the 65-63 win for the Cougars to give them their first road win since Feb. 17, 2024.
“I’m especially thankful for my teammates, the relationships we built and the memories we made will always stick with me. Thank you, Houston, for everything.”
With 10 departures due to eligibility and transfers, the Cougars will now have three returning players for the 2026-27 season.
