Doggett, Chen lead Houston men’s golf at Augusta Invitational

Houston men’s golf put together a strong showing at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, led by junior Grant Doggett and sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen.

Doggett finished tied for 14th place at 9-under par, with his tournament success largely due to carding scores of 68 and 67 across the first two rounds.

While Doggett was cruising early in the tournament, he found himself in some trouble early in the final round.

Through the first five holes, Doggett was 4-over; however, he managed to post four birdies throughout the final holes to secure his fifth top-20 finish of the season.

Chen also finished the final round strong, firing a career-best 66 to climb his way into a top-20 finish.

He shot a bogey-free final round, along with four birdies and an eagle, to finish the tournament in 19th place.

Senior Hudson Weibel followed, finishing in 31st place. Weibel started out the tournament on top, firing a 64 in the first round with nine birdies.

With his strong opening round, he joined a short list of players at the University of Houston to shoot multiple rounds of 64 or better. 

Junior Chi Chun Chen matched Weibel with a tie for 31st, while senior Bryant Hiskey II finished 65th overall.

As a team, Houston was in sixth after day one of the tournament; however, with a stacked field, the Cougars found themselves outside the top-10 when the event finished.

Next up, Houston men’s golf will wrap up its regular season schedule at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, taking place April 11-12 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
