Houston men's basketball following win against Oakland | Dawson Norris

Three former Houston Cougars from the 2023-24 team took to social media to react to Houston’s 73-72 win over Auburn on Saturday.

Houston’s former point guard and current Toronto Raptor Jamal Shead praised freshman guard Kingston Flemings, who scored a career-high 22 points.

“Kingston is a guy,” Shead wrote on X

L.J. Cryer, Houston’s leading scorer over the previous two seasons, commented “real deal” before posting Flemings’ name with a smoke-blowing emoji.

In the game’s final seconds, J’Wan Roberts, the winningest player in program history, offered some commentary on an Instagram story, calling the Cougars “road warriors” as they defeated Auburn at a neutral-site game in Birmingham, Ala., that still carried all the hallmarks of a road environment.

Last season Roberts and Cryer led Houston to a perfect 10-0 record in true road games.

Although Kingston, guard Isiah Harwell and center Chris Cenac haven’t played an official road game, they faced a tough challenge against No. 22 Auburn in the team’s home state

The trio scored 33 of Houston’s 39 first half points, with Flemings putting up 18.

“These guys are just starting their careers. These guys were in high school last year,” coach Kelvin Sampson said. “I thought they handled whether it was the whistle or the crowd.”
