Houston men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to College Station to compete in their first meet of the 2026 season. Both teams finished second in the Aggie Opener Friday at Watts Country Course, with the women’s squad recording 42 points in the two-mile race and the men totaling 38 points in the 5k.
Five juniors on the women’s squad placed within the top-15 out of nearly 50 competitors. Candace Patterson led the scoreboard with a fifth-place finish at 10:51.8, followed by Addison Hite in sixth place at 10:57.4.
Lily Campos took eighth in 11:11.3. AnnClaire Cop and Julia Shimel placed 10th and 13th, respectively, with times of 11:15.7 and 11:18.7.
In the men’s 5k, five Cougars finished within the top-20 out of 43 running opponents. Senior Henok Hagos completed the event in 15:21.1 and placed second overall.
Senior Jack Boyd came in fourth place with a time of 15:20.4, succeeded by fellow senior David Soto in sixth at 15:26.5. Caden Thurman took home ninth place at 15:35.3, and junior Remay Abraha placed 17th at 16:03.4.
Up next, Houston will return to College Station on Friday, Sept. 11 for the Texas A&M Invitational. The men’s 8k will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the women’s 5k at 8:35 a.m.
