The hunt for a new Big 12 commissioner is on, as Brett Yormark is set to leave the conference, it was announced Friday.
“Serving as the commissioner of the Big 12 Conference has been an extraordinary honor,” Yormark said in a statement.
Yormark made the decision of his own accord, which he told his bosses nearly 10 days ago. He will remain commissioner, however, through January 2027. After his tenure, he is expected to take on a role outside of college sports.
The Big 12 had extended Yormark’s contract through 2030 in May of 2025.
Yormark became the fifth Big 12 commissioner on Aug. 1, 2022, after serving three years as the CEO and President of Business Operations and Strategy for rapper Jay-Z’s Roc Nation entertainment company.
His signature move came three months into his tenure, when he finalized a new media rights deal for the conference with ESPN and Fox Sports.
He also added Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah to the Big 12 in 2023.
“I am looking forward to passing the baton to the next commissioner and continuing to cheer this league on as a lifelong fan of the Big 12,” Yormark said.
A national search for his replacement has already begun, led by the Big 12 Board of Directors.
