Sophie Shouten competed in her final collegiate tennis match, and secured Houston's only point against Texas Tech.

On Wednesday, Houston traveled to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the first round of the Big 12 tennis tournament against Texas Tech. The Cougars were seeded seventh, while Texas Tech entered as the tenth seed and defeated the Cougars with a 4-1 win.

Seniors Hailey Murphy and Yekaterina Dmitrichenko secured the first doubles point for the Red Raiders, winning 6-1 on court one against senior pair Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli. 

In a tight match, junior pair Elizaveta Morozova and Iva Sepa were shaded 6-3 on court two by sophomore Elena Daskalova and senior Mariia Hlahola. 

In singles play, court six finished first with Schouten out-besting freshman Ella Brownback 6-2, 6-2, marking her 17th win of the season, and Houston’s only point of the morning.

Dmitrichenko succeeded 6-4, 6-2 over Zeghlouli on court two, followed by freshman Havana Kadi winning 6-3, 6-0 against junior Petja Drame on court five. 

Texas Tech knocked out Houston on court one when Murphy defeated Morozova 6-3, 6-4 to conclude Houston tennis’ spring slate. 

The team finished with a 17-6 overall record, a year removed from winning just four matches.
