Houston football secures undefeated 6-0 road record with win over Baylor

WACO, Texas — Entering Saturday, both Houston and Baylor had the same number in mind: six. 

For Houston, six meant a spotless 6-0 record on the road, a mark no other FBS program in 2025 could stake claim to.

A sixth win would give the Bears an automatic bid for a bowl game, for the fourth time in six years.

For Houston, the sixth win became reality on Saturday, in a 31-24 triumph over the Bears at McLane Stadium.

“That’s outstanding for the guys to have that resiliency week after week on the road,” coach Willie Fritz said.

It’s the first time the Cougars have finished the season 6-0 on the road since 2021, and only the third time in program history, alongside 2011.

Just last season, Houston finished a lowly 1-5, tied for the worst mark in the Big 12 conference. 

To solidify themselves as road warriors in 2025, the Cougars had to weather a fourth-quarter storm from Baylor that gave Houston all it could handle.

Leading 31-24 with 1:57 after Baylor had already put up 15 fourth-quarter points, including a fourth-and-9 touchdown pass to tie the game 24, the Bears once again found themselves with a chance to tie or take the lead.

A deep shot from senior quarterback Sawyer Robertson for 48 yards set Baylor up at the Houston 27, with ample time to reach the end zone. 

Senior defensive back Latrell McCutchin Sr. had plans of his own, thwarting back-to-back plays on second and third downs, leaving Baylor with one final play to keep its bowl hopes alive. 

“Just being able to get as many targets as I did today was a blessing in itself,” McCutchin said. “Being able to make those plays, I was definitely excited and I definitely had some fire to make them.”

Robertson threw his fourth consecutive incompletion, turning the ball over on downs to seal the win for Houston.

In the first half, Houston got off to an early 14-3 lead, the kind of quick start that eluded Houston in its previous three matchups where it trailed through the first quarter.

Junior quarterback Conner Weigman had those two scores to his name, one to his top target, junior wide receiver Amare Thomas, for his 10th touchdown grab of the season.

The other had several Baylor defenders watching from the turf, as numerous juke moves gave Weigman a 28-yard rushing touchdown.

He finished with two on the day, bringing his season total up to a team-leading 11.

“I don’t know if my coaches knew I had that in me,” Weigman said. “So I was telling them in spring ball, fall camp. They’d say ‘hit your checkdowns’, and I’d just take off running.”

Houston finishes the regular season with a 9-3 record, a five-win improvement from a season ago.

Houston will now await its bowl destination, which will be announced on Dec. 7.
