In the penultimate Big 12 Weekly Awards, Houston’s junior goalkeeper Sierra McCluer and fifth-year defender and captain Ella Morgan took home Big 12 Goalkeeper and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Wednesday.
McCluer defended her award after a two-save, clean-sheet performance against No. 15 Kansas on Friday, Oct. 30, her seventh shutout of the season. It was the first time that the Jayhawks were shut out in conference play this season.
McCluer is the first player to win conference player of the week in back-to-back weeks since Cami Koski in September 2013.
Morgan earned her first Big 12 weekly honor, scoring the go-ahead goal against Kansas in the 2-0 win, Houston’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2021. She played all 90 minutes, helping the Cougars’ backline limit the Jayhawks to two shots on goal.
Individually, Morgan had 18 defensive contributions, three interceptions, eight ball recoveries and won six out of her seven ground duels. Morgan is the first Houston player to capture a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor.
In addition, Morgan was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.
McCluer and Morgan are the first pair of Cougars selected for conference player of the week honors since Oct. 28, 2022, when Hailey Woodward won AAC Rookie of the Week and Emma Clarke won AAC Defensive Player of the Week.
