One year ago, I was unsure what my future in sports journalism would look like. I knew I wanted to keep telling stories and creating opportunities for young journalists. What I didn’t know was that those ambitions would lead me to create Cougar Sports.
Today, I reflect on a year of discovering what is possible when you believe in an idea enough to pursue it.
Over the past year, we have published nearly 400 articles and reached nearly 14,000 followers across our social media platforms.
Thank you to UH Athletics for the privilege of interviewing athletes and coaches and attending games, and to our mentors for your support, guidance, and encouragement. This year has only strengthened my conviction in the value of journalism grounded in firsthand accounts and accuracy, something made possible in part by the access we are fortunate to receive.
Alejandro, our managing and web editor, thank you for your constant commitment to showing up, both at events and for our team. None of this would be possible without your leadership, dedication and willingness to help turn an idea into something real.
Michael, our associate editor, thank you for your dedication to learning about and honoring the history of every facet of UH Athletics. Your commitment to telling these stories and approaching your work with integrity makes our coverage more meaningful.
To all our leaders, writers and photographers, watching you grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of building this publication. Regardless of title, each of you has shown that leadership is defined by the initiative you take, the people you support and your commitment to excellence. Without your willingness to tell the stories of campus athletics, none of this would be possible. I am incredibly grateful for everything you contribute to Cougar Sports.
We are honored to provide a platform where student journalists can develop their skills, learn the importance of professionalism and gain firsthand experience covering every varsity sport.
Building Cougar Sports has shown me what is possible when people come together around a shared purpose.
I am proud of what we have accomplished in our first year. I look forward to everything we will continue to build together. Thank you for reading and supporting us, Coogs!
