Houston men’s golf competed in the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and the Colin Montgomerie Invitational at Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land March 1-3.
Weibel leads Cougars to top-15 finish in Cabo Collegiate
Senior Hudson Weibel, coming off his third individual championship of the season, led Houston in finishing 11th at 3-under 210.
Junior Chi Chun Chen finished the tournament tied for 35th with a score of 216, junior Grant Doggett and sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen tied at 70th with 226 and senior Kevin An tied for 72nd with 227.
All efforts amounted to the Cougars finishing 13th with a three-day score of 873.
On the first day of the tournament, Weibel led the Cougars with a tie for 20th, scoring a 1-under 70.
Weibel, who started off the tournament No. 10, moved under par with three birdies in his first eight holes. He began the second nine with two birdies in the first three holes, also going back-to-back on holes 16-17.
He was joined by Arizona State freshman Boston Bracken, Ole Miss sophomore Collins Trolio, Arizona sophomore Taishi Moto and Florida State graduate Patrick McCann at 20th.
On the third and final day of competition, Weibel sank three birdies in his last five holes, en route to a bogey-free 69.
After starting the day at 15th, Weibel collected 12 straight pars before his first birdie at hole No. 10. Following two more pars, he shot birdie on his last two holes to pick up his sixth straight top-25 finish.
Florida State junior Tyler Weaver, Arizona State senior Michael Mjaaseth, Rice senior Lukas Boandl and Tennessee senior Josh Hill joined Weibel at 11th.
Chen made a 21-place jump on the second day of competition, moving to 26th place from 47th, as he sank four birdies in the process and led the Cougars with a 2-under 69. He and Weibel ended the day tied at 26th with a score of 143.
Houston collectively ended the first day at 13th place with a score of 298. No. 11 Oklahoma State led at the end of the day with a score of 280, followed by No. 7 Arizona State and No. 9 Arkansas with scores of 281, California and Rice at 282, No. 17 Georgia Tech at 283, No. 18 Tennessee at 284, No. 36 Florida State and No. 20 Stanford at 286 and No. 13 Ole Miss at 292, rounding out the Top-10.
California senior Ziqin Zhou led at the end of the day with a score of 64.
Although the Cougars improved their score by nine strokes on the second day, they again finished 13th with a score of 587. No. 9 Arkansas finished the day with the lead, holding a score of 551, followed by No. 7 Arizona State at 557, Rice at 560, Ole Miss at 563, No. 18 Tennessee at 564, No. 27 Arizona at 569, No. 17 Georgia Tech at 571, No. 36 Florida State at 572 and No. 20 Stanford at 573.
Oklahoma State junior Preston Stout held the lead at the end of the second round with a score of 63.
The Cowboys took home the tournament championship with a score of 830 with Stout earning medalist honors.
Colin Montgomerie Invitational
Junior Enrique Karg led the Cougars at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, as he finished tied for fourth at 5-under 208.
Senior Bryant Hiskey finished tied at 37th with a score of 221 and freshman Jayk Altic finished tied at 54th, as he scored 225.
Karg finished at 13th after the first day of competition, shooting sub-par rounds of 70-71. He sank four birdies in the round, going back-to-back on holes six and seven, and 11 and 12.
Karg also shot three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 hole to finish 1-under.
Meanwhile, Hiskey finished the first day tied at 34th with a score of 147, while Altic tied at 42nd with a score of 149.
On the second and final day of competition, Karg sank six birdies, hitting three straight to finish with a 67.
Next, the Cougars will head back home to host the All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble March 16-17.
