Houston women’s soccer settles for 1-1 draw against Memphis

Houston women’s soccer played to a 1-1 draw against Memphis on Thursday, bringing the Cougars’ record to 2-1-3 after six games.

The Cougars entered the match looking to build on Sunday’s near upset against No. 3 Vanderbilt, but Memphis controlled much of the offensive action in a defensive battle.

Houston junior goalkeeper Sierra McCluer made nine saves to keep the Tigers from adding to their early lead. Memphis finished with 21 shots, including 10 on goal.

Senior forward Adelhia Ghonda scored an unassisted lone goal for Houston in the 18th minute in response to Memphis’ opening score in the ninth minute. The Cougars recorded only one shot on goal for the remainder of the match.

The draw marked Houston’s third tie of the season, with all three matches ending in low-scoring affairs.

Houston will continue its non-conference schedule against Sam Houston at 7 p.m. next Thursday.
