The 2026 season opener of Houston soccer was a tale of two halves, as the Cougars shared the points in a 0-0 draw against the defending ASUN Graphite Division champion Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers.
The first half was fairly even as the Eagles’ intensity on and off the ball kept the Cougars sharp as they tried to play their direct, oriented style. Despite that, both teams ended the half with three shots each, though FGCU had one on target from senior midfielder Sarah Greiner that forced a save from Houston junior goalkeeper Sierra McCluer, who finished with three for the day.
The second half showed improvements from the Cougars, especially on the offensive end. With combination play and making use of the wide areas, Houston outshot the Eagles 10-6 in the half, with junior forward Jada Arthurs leading the way with three shots.
Florida Gulf Coast sophomore goalkeeper Madara Bome was more than up to the task with four saves.
The half got scrappy at times, with Houston senior defender Jocelyn Chinea receiving a yellow card for unsporting conduct, while Greiner and junior midfielder Kate Friday of Florida Gulf Coast received yellows as well for similar offenses.
Both teams left it all on the field in the final minutes, looking for the one goal to break the deadlock, but couldn’t muster anything as time expired.
Houston will look to improve on its performance for its home opener on Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Carl Lewis International Complex as part of a two-game homestand, where it will face Northwestern State at 7 p.m
