Houston men’s golf closed out its NCAA postseason at the Bermuda Run Regional with a historic final-round showing on Wednesday.
The Cougars went on to final sixth overall after posting its lowest NCAA Regional round in program history.
Houston improved in every round of the three-day tournament in North Carolina, opening with a 287 on Monday and following up with a 278 on Tuesday.
The Cougars’ best performance came on Wednesday, firing a 15-under 269 to finish the event at 18-under 834.
The final-round score broke the previous school NCAA Regional record of 272 set during the 2016 Franklin Regional.
Senior Hudson Weibel led the way for the Cougars and played a major role in Houston’s late comeback.
Weibel carded a 3-under 68 in the second round to move Houston into eighth place heading into the final day.
He followed that with another strong performance on Wednesday, shooting a 66 to finish tied for 14th at 6-under 207.
Sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen made one of the biggest jumps during the tournament. After sitting just outside the top 40 entering the final round, he surged 19 spots with a 66 to finish 25th in the tournament.
Junior Grant Doggett followed in scoring for Houston, finishing with a 2-under 211 in 29th.
Houston’s late rally nearly pushed the Cougars into NCAA Championship qualifying position; however, the team needed to be top-five in order to advance.
This performance marked the third consecutive season in which Houston finished among the top seven teams in NCAA Regional play, and the Cougars will look to take that next step of advancing to an NCAA Championship next season.
