Houston men’s golf participated in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club March 23-24, where the Cougars finished tied for ninth ahead of five ranked teams.
The Cougars tied with No. 23 Duke as they beat No. 8 Arizona State, No. 13 Pepperdine, No. 24 USC and No. 29 Wake Forest.
Senior Grant Doggett tallied a 2-under 69 in the last round and nailed five birdies, as he led the Cougars for the event’s third straight round.
Senior Hudson Weibel and junior Hsuan-Yi Chen both tied for 34th, as they posted 3-under scores over the three rounds.
Weibel shot 1-under 70 with five birdies, while Chen’s team-leading seven birdies gave him an even-par 71 score.
The first day of competition saw Houston post one of its best days of the season, finishing tied for second with a 15-under.
The Cougars’ three eagles and a score of 24-under were good for second in both stats on the first day.
Doggett led Houston as he shot 5-under on day one with four birdies on the back nine and an eagle on hole No. 15.
Weibel tallied Houston’s third sub-par day with a 2-under score, nailing 10 birdies and an eagle on hole No. 7.
Chen finished the day tied at 31st scoring 3-under, shooting eight birdies and two eagles, both on No. 15.
Next, the Cougars will tee off in the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. April 4-5, before closing out the regular season in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C April 11-12.
