Texas transfer guard Chendall Weaver commits to Houston

Texas transfer guard Chendall Weaver has committed to Houston men’s basketball, per Joe Tipton of On3.

The Arlington native’s commitment to coach Kelvin Sampson came after entering the transfer portal following three seasons at Texas, for which he was granted a fifth year of NCAA eligibility as a member of the 2022 high school recruiting class through U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney’s July 31 ruling.

Weaver capped off his Longhorn career averaging 5.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in coach Sean Miller’s first season at the helm in 2025-26, helping Texas capture a Sweet 16 run in the NCAA tournament West Region as a No. 11-seed.

In his career over four seasons dating back to his freshman campaign at UT Arlington in 2022-23, Weaver averaged 7.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 46% from the field. 

One of Weaver’s performances in particular caught Sampson’s eye in the Cougars’ inaugural 2023-24 campaign in the Big 12 Conference, when Houston first faced Texas on the road as new and eventually outgoing members, respectively. 

“I think their best defensive guard is Weaver,” Sampson said shortly after Houston’s 76-72 overtime win over Texas at Moody Center in Austin on Jan. 29, 2024. “He knows how to use his athleticism.”

While then-senior guard and nearby Manor native Jamal Shead dropped a game-leading 25 points and eight rebounds in the winning effort, then-sophomore Weaver exhibited game-altering moments in his 26 minutes off the bench for the Longhorns. 

Weaver forced Shead to miss what could’ve been a game-winning triple with just 2.8 seconds remaining in regulation. 

“When you have a kid like him setting the standard, that makes the other guys better,” Sampson said. “So I’m not taking anything against the other kids, but I’m gonna sit here and give a big shout-out to the Weaver kid.”

Now, one of Sampson’s highest opposing praises becomes the latest member of his 2026 portal class.
