Houston tennis celebrated senior day with a 4-1 win over Kansas State on Sunday, improving to 16-5 overall and moving above .500 in conference play at 6-5.
Houston was originally scheduled to play two conference matches over the weekend, beginning Friday against Oklahoma State. However, the Cowboys were forced to cancel due to an insufficient number of players, resulting in an automatic win for the Cougars under conference rules.
On Sunday, Houston honored its four seniors: Gabriela Cortes, Chems Doha Zeghlouli, Elizaveta Morozova and Sophie Schouten before taking the court.
The Cougars secured an early advantage by claiming the doubles point. Morozova and junior Petja Drame set the tone with a 6-3 win, while juniors Iva Sepa and Valeriia Krokhotina followed with a 6-4 victory to clinch the point.
Houston carried that momentum into singles play. Krokhotina delivered a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win, and Sepa followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to put the Cougars within one point of clinching the match.
Kansas State picked up its only point after Morozova fell 6-3, 6-2, but Drame secured the overall win for Houston with a 6-3, 6-3 decision.
The Cougars will close out the regular season on the road, facing West Virginia at 4 p.m. Friday before traveling to Cincinnati for an 11 a.m. match Sunday.
